NEW DELHI : Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee has ended her hunger strike after 25 days in protest against the TATA motors plant in Singur.
After being administered fluids, Mamata was taken to a hospital for medical examination.
The move comes after personal appeals from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President A P J Abdul Kalam.
“We are happy that she has ended her fast. The CPM has been thoroughly exposed. The PM had to intervene. The Left speaks one language in Calcutta and another in Delhi,” said Prakash Javadekar, BJP.
In a personal letter written to Mamata, the PM promised that the Chief Minister will discuss all issues with her.
Earlier on Thursday, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattarcharya sent a letter to Mamata Banerjee with a compromise formula.
The move came after the Chief Minister held a meeting with key ministers including the Industries Minister Nirupam Sen.
An NDA delegation, led by former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, also met President A P J Abdul Kalam.
They submitted a memorandum to the President asking him to personally intervene on Singur.
Kalam expressed serious concern at the deteriorating health of Mamata Banerjee.
He also spoke to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and emphasised the need to find a way to end the stalemate and to enable Mamata to end the fast.
