Watch for terror via sea: Antony
EZHIMALA: Defence Minister A K Antony said that maritime terrorism has become the biggest threat to the security of the nation and that the situation warrants constant vigil from the Indian Navy.
Addressing a news conference here on Monday, Antony, who was on his first visit to the Ezhimala Naval Academy after assuming office as Defence Minister, said, “the nation is facing all kinds of threats from the sea including those from terrorists, pirates and drug traffickers and this has to be met by strengthening the naval force and the coastal policing system. Earlier, the seas were a neglected zoneâ€.
The situation has gone a sea change now, Antony said, pointing out that anything happened in the sea could lead to chaos through out the country.
Pointing to the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean, he said that over the years major powers have shown keen interest in the ocean, and India must take care to protect this region.
