BJP to adopt distressed farmers

NAGPUR: The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its plan to support at least 500 students and families of farmers who have committed suicide in the six most distressed districts in cotton belt of Vidarbha.

State BJP leader Nitin Gadkari’s plan comes in the backdrop of all relief measures, including prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s much publicised Rs 3,750 crore package, announced a year ago, proving ineffective in stopping spate of suicides in the region.

“The BJP workers along with the Rambhau Mhalgi Prabhodini (trust) will adopt families of farmers in Yavatmal and other districts in the suicide-hit areas. While, at least ten students will be adopted from the worst-hit Yavatmal district, funds will be drawn from the trust to help needy families of the farmers. At least, Rs 15,000 will be spent on each of the adopted students during a five-year support period, said Gadkari, who is also chairman of the trust.

The support scheme will be formally launched in September by adopting students from affected villages at a function to be organised in Yavatmal. BJP national president Rajnath Singh will be present at the function, a statement released by Gadkari said. “We will continue our fight to get these victim families their due from the government.

But at the same time we will provide adequate support so that these families live with self respect. Special care will be taken towards education of children of the suicide-affected families,” the BJP leader said. The party leaders have started contribution for the education and family support schemes. Well-known actress Smriti Irani has already donated Rs 3 lakh to the Mhalgi trust for supporting 20 women.
