SSCP,A Threat to Nation’s Security-Director General of the Coast Guard

NEW DELHI: Confirming the views of Scholars like Shri Kalyanaraman and Captain Balakrishnan (Retd) about the threat posed by SSCP to Nation’s Security, Director General of the Coast Guard on Thursday said that the project poses a security threat to the country.

Times of India reports that Vice Admiral RF Cotractor said that there is a strong possibility of the canal being used by militants. The narrow canal would put the ships moving through it at a greater risk of attack by terrorists active in the region. He also confirmed that he has already conveyed his views about the project to government.

A week back Naval chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta also questioned the viability of this project for Big vessels.He added that the project was economically unviable as both the Navy and international shipping agencies would not be able to use the canal. The project, if it becomes operational, would incur a loss of Rs 3,000 crore every year.

Admiral Suresh Mehta also echoed the concern raised by Retd. Captain of Indian Navy H. Balakrishnan that The Sethusamudram canal would be only 12 meters deep, and only ships weighing up to 30,000 tonnes would navigate through it.

Ironically Experts in the field have given ample proofs to the non viability of SSCP project to the farce Committee formed by Baalu to hoodwink the Judiciary. Instead of giving a listening ear to the warnings of Scholars and Security chiefs, Shipping Minister Baalu was behaving like a child who lost in a game. He even wired a Complaint to Defence Minister Antony demanding an apology from Naval Chief for airing his views which apparently hurt the selfish conspirators behind this project.
