via Pioneer News Service | Kannur published on March 2, 2008

Former chief of the Central Intelligence Bureau and internal security expert Ajit K Doval said on Sunday that Left terrorism was a major threat to the country and that more than 40 per cent of the country was facing the threat of Left extremism.

Addressing a seminar on internal security organised by the Bharateeya Vichara Kendram here as part of its State conference, Doval said that the UPA Government had compromised to a large extent on the internal security of the country. This would affect the country in the long run, he pointed out.

He said that compared to the Left extremism, other kinds of terrorism were less in the country. He also said that the Left terror groups generally spread among people by capitalising on the poverty of the communities. It was gaining ground in several parts of the country mainly due to the pusillanimity of the ruling forces when acting against the terror groups. The former head of the IB said that the Government should not delay the creation of a framework for the internal security.
