Police said the explosion took place at the dump at Sarbamangala Ghat in Sutanati slum area in Chitpur, mainly inhabited by ragpickers.
“Four people were killed and nine were injured after a crude bomb exploded in garbage dump. The incident happened when some ragpickers went to collect plastic pouches from the dump,” Additional Commissioner of Police (I), Subrata Narayan Sarkar, told PTI.
“As they were scourging through the dumping ground they found the bomb and ignorantly tried to break it and that caused the explosion,” Sarkar said.
The deceased were identified as Saket Sana (3), Ranjan Mollah, Hasan Sardar and Didar Mollah — all ragpickers who lived in that slum area.
All the injured were shifted to the nearby RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. According to hospital sources, the condition of three is serious.
So far it seems to be a one-off case and an accident and not a carefully planted operation, a senior police officer said.
Bomb squad and forensic department have been summoned and they were trying to find out whether there was chemical reaction which has caused the explosion.
Meanwhile, three unclaimed bags triggered bomb scares at different hours at the NSC Bose International Airport here, airport sources said.
In the morning, two bags were found abandoned at the domestic terminal. The owner of one of the bags was identified as a passenger from Guwahati. However, no explosive was found.
Similarly, a black suitcase was found near a toilet of the international lounge around noon. The bomb disposal squad found that it contained nothing but a few clothes and a passport.
Though the owner is identified as one Ranavijay Jadav from Uttar Pradesh, none has turned up to claim the bag.
As per the details on the passport, the suitcase belongs to a Bangkok-bound passenger. |
