Subramanian Swamy assaulted in Madras HC

Janata
Party president Subramanian Swamy was assaulted by a group of lawyers
in a courtroom at the Madras High Court on Tuesday. The incident
happened between 11.45 am and 12.05 pm in the court of Justice PK
Mishra and Justice K Chandru, during the hearing of a case filed by
Dikshithars of Chidambaram Natarajan Temple challenging a single judge
order allowing the Government to take over the temple administration.
Swamy was present in the court to plead himself. Shouting pro-LTTE
slogans, the advocates manhandled Swamy.

The agitated lawyers
shouted, “get out you Brahmin dog”, “you LTTE-hater”. They hurled
rotten eggs at Swamy, soiling his clothes and beating him on the right
side of his neck.

Swamy was waiting for his case to come up in
the courtroom when the attack took place. Even as he enjoys Z-category
security, his security personnel were not allowed inside the courtroom
as per rules.

Swamy has been given the Z-category security
because he has been demanding the extradition of LTTE chief V
Prabhakaran to India so that he can be tried in the Rajiv Gandhi
assassination case. He is on the LTTE hit list.

Subsequently
when his case came up, Swamy appealed to the Division Bench to direct
the State Government to take action against the assaulters.

The
Division Bench directed the Government to provide full security to
Swamy. The court also directed the Chennai Police Commissioner to take
action against the advocates involved. A copy of the order has been
sent to the Chief Justice for further action and a report on the matter
has been sent the Supreme Court.

Sri Lankan army offensive
against the LTTE has pushed the latter to a corner. But that has made
pro-LTTE elements in Tamil Nadu, especially advocates, go on agitation
path since October last year.

Even as they continue to agitate
everyday on the streets, this is the second time such an incident
happened on the Madras High Court premises. Earlier, the agitators
dared to indulge in violence in the room of Chief Justice himself,
dragging out advocates, including senior lawyers and judges, who did
not pay heed to their call for boycott of courts, out of courtrooms and
chambers.

According to a source in the court, no action was
taken against these agitating lawyers, the police are passive
spectators and the Government simply does not take any action against
these unruly advocates. This has emboldened the pro-LTTE advocates to
create more problems. The agitating advocates represent the pro-LTTE
groups and political parties like the MDMK, PMK, VCK, some Tamil
fanatical groups and Naxals, said the source. The source also said that
the attack on Swamy seemed a planned one as they came prepared with
eggs. They pushed a police officer out of the hall and bolted the door
from inside in front of the shocked judges before attacking Swamy. It
was only when one of the judges threatened to take action against the
advocates that the attackers left.
