Amritanandamayi Math takes up 50-cr relief work

KOCHI: The Mata Amritanandamayi Math has taken up relief work in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh following the recent floods and has announced that Rs 50 crore will be spent for rehabilitation activities in the two states, including building houses.

According to a press release issued by Brahmachari Abhayamrita Chaitanya, brahmacharis, devotees and a medical team of five doctors – supported by a telemedicine van and an ambulance – have already left for Bijapur, Bagalkot and Belgaum districts in Karnataka.

In Andhra Pradesh, the Math has taken up extensive relief work in Kurnool and Mehaboobnagar districts. A team of 12 doctors and paramedics are accompanying them, the release stated. In both these states, food, blankets, bed sheets and clothes have been distributed.

The details of the villages where relief activities will be taken up shall be decided after discussion with state governments, local governmental bodies and relief commissioners.

The Amritanandamayi Math had carried out relief and rehabilitation activities after the Gujarat earthquake of 2001, the Tsunami that struck the coast of South India and Sri Lanka, the Kashmir earthquake of 2005 and the Bihar floods of 2008.

In Gujarat, the Math had rebuilt about 1,200 houses and following the Tsunami, the Math had rebuilt about 6,200 houses in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Pondicherry, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Sri Lanka. The Math also built schools, day-care centres and community halls in the adopted villages.
