Hubli Maidan liberated from Jihadi clutches,Court verdict a well dereved kick for Jihadis
Hubli : Secularists and Jihadis once again received a richly and well deserved kick for claiming Hubli Maidan as the private property of a Jihadi organisation Anjuman Islam.
The Supreme Court dismissed the petition of Anjuman-e-Islam, claiming ownership of the Hubli Idgah Maidan in Karnataka and held that the land belonged to the local municipality. A bench comprising Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Mukundakam Sharma, however, permitted members of the Muslim community to offer namaz at the grounds twice a year without raising any permanent structures like mosques.
The Jihadi organisation had always opposed the attempts of various other organisations to conduct public functions in this ground owned by Hubli Muncipality. Even attempts to hoist National flag during Independence day was opposed by these Anti National Jihadis.
On August 15, 1994, six people were killed in police firing when Rashtradhwaja Gourava Samrakshana Vedike activists, led by Uma Bharati, marched towards the disputed land to hoist the Tricolour. Then Madhya Pradesh CM Uma Bharati, who led the Idgah Maidan liberation movement, issued non-bailable warrant by Hubli magistrate court. She resigned and surrendered before the court for hoisting National flag on a public ground on Independenceday
The first case relating to the Maidan had been filed by a few individuals from the city in 1972, praying the court for an order to declare the Maidan as a public property, after which the lower court had directed Anjuman to demolish the buildings it had constructed on the impugned land. Anjuman then approached the High Court and lost the case there too. It had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court in the year 1995.
