Chief Minister Narendra Modi has said the success of Garib Kalyan Melas being held all over the State have made ‘agents’ uncomfortable. Addressing the 40th Garib Kalyan Mela at Mehsana on Wednesday afternoon, Modi said these events disbursing direct help to the people have eliminated the role of middlemen and that has made many people uncomfortable.

Modi’s obvious reference was to the Opposition Congress which has taken objection to the Chief Minister personally handing over Government grants to the people at these melas.

Around 85,000 beneficiaries received tool-kits and financial assistance totaling Rs 94 crore at Wednesday’s mela in Mehsana.

“No one in the past thought about improving living conditions of the poor. But we have launched the campaign to eliminate poverty. That has made the critics uncomfortable,” Modi said at the rally in Mehsana.

The Chief Minister listed achievements of his Govern-ment the rehabilitation and reconstruction after the 2001 earthquake, Sujalam Sufalam water supply scheme and the Jyotigram Yojana of 24 hours power supply to all villages.

Around 10 more such melas are scheduled in different parts of the State.
