‘Bus Day Celebrations’ in Lawless Tamilnadu

We wonder if any state in India, or anywhere else in the world has a stupider Government Sponsored Celebration than this “Bus Day” for students.

As we remember there used to be one day in the year when these students were permitted to run amok all over the City in State Owned buses, but it lookd like a round-the-year thing now with each College entitled to celebrate its own Bus Day whenever the Mood comes upon them.

“Bus Day Celebration Rules” are very simple. A gang of students of some college and their friends decide it is their Bus Day. They stop a public transport bus anywhere, force passengers to get down, clamber on the roof and command the driver and conductor to drive all over the town, boozing, throwing invectives and anything solid or liquid available on passers by, and if the Driver and conductor have “behaved themselves” they may garland them and take photographs, after getting themselves dropped off at palces of their choice. But given the slightest provocation by the public, the conductor or the driver, they will go rioting, beat up drivers and the public and burn the bus, or other buses and vehicles they can lay their hands on.

The Police, the State Transport Corporations, and the very Militiant Trade Unions of the Drivers and Conductors, as well as the State Government looks on benignly, and no student indulging in this form of rioting is ever arrested, or any action taken for recovery of damages.

Around a hundred buses or more may have been damaged over the years, but there is no sign of a move to ban Bus Day either from Police, Government, or Political Parties.

The aam aadmis, and the Media too of TN are of course too terrified to moot such a notion.

Which leads us to conclude that this is part of the Political Training Program for future Kazhagam-Congress Cadres in conducting riots, arson, sabotage, assassinations, holocausts, damage to Public and Private Property, and tandoorifying citizens.
