VHP seeks uniform norms for citizens’ register

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) asked the Central Government to follow a uniform national norm, accepting 1951 electoral role as the base year for inclusion of names in the National Register for Citizens (NRC) and not 1971 as the cut-off year, as advocated by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

“There must be a uniform policy in the country,” VHP general secretary Praveen Togadia told journalists, demanding the Centre not adopt a separate norm in case of Assam.

The Central Government had earlier agreed to consider 1966 as the base year for inclusion of names in the NRC for Assam.

Gogoi, however, insisted on 1971 as the cut-off, as per the provisions of the tripartite Assam-Accord signed in 1985, after years of violent anti-foreigners stir that claimed lives of several thousands people.

Togadia said Centre must follow 1951 as the cut off year for Assam too, asserting that the Congress insistence on 1971 was aimed at appeasing the Muslims for political gains, which would only encourage infiltration of illegal migrants from across the borders.

As it is, VHP leader said, Assam was turning into a hotbed of jehadi activities due to the failure of the Central Government to contain influx.

“NRC, therefore, is critical to national security, and must not be used to legitimise illegal influx,” he said, asserting that if infiltration went unchecked, Assam would soon become another J&K, where Hindus had lost their rights.

Togadia, who was here to attend the silver jubilee celebration of the Bajrang Dal in Assam, urged all Hindus — Bengali, Assamese, Marwari, Nepali and others — not to employ Bangladeshis in any economic activity.
