40 elephants take part in Aanayootu

Forty elephants participated in the aanayootu (feeding of elephants) at the famous Vadakkunnathan Temple here on Tuesday morning with the animals being served a sumptuous meal of rice, jaggery and banana


The aanayootu, in which meals are served to the elephants, was held on the occasion of beginning of the Malayalam month of ‘Karkkidam’ on Tuesday.


The ceremony began with Melsanthi (chief priest) Kothambully Narayanan Namboodiri offering rice, jaggery and banana to the youngest among the herd of elephants.


The Cochin Devaswom Board (CDB) president TG Ravi, district collector and district superintendent of police were also present on the occasion, the temple sources said.


A ‘Mahaganpathi’ Homam with 1,008 coconuts was also held earlier at the temple, the sources added.
