An economics lecturer in Mumbai,Kottayi had returned to her native village in Kozhikode in the mid-nineties with her two young sons after the death of her physician husband. But coming back to her ancestral house situated in a five acre plot,Kottayi found that some portions had been encroached by a local leader.Daughter of a former CPM leader,Kottayi raised her voice, only to be gagged by the party. When she did not relent, the local leadership imposed a social boycott claiming that she had denied work to Narayani in her property. The locals were stopped from working for her, buying things from her or even communicating with the family. At nights, her house was stoned and children heckled. The harassment went on for years.
Unable to bear the torture, one of her kids even jumped into their well, but managed to survive.Even then, she could not sell the house to find the money for his treatment due to the restrictions.
The world heard of her plight in 2004 when a TV channel broke the story.Soon there were more threats and finally, one night she was attacked for daring to speak to the media.
