KANHANGAD: A rape accused is getting VIP treatment at the District Hospital here. And he also enjoys the backing of a section of police and the medical officers.

Kunhahammed, 57, chairman of the Manzoor Hospital, had been remanded by the judicial magistrate court here on November 16 after he was arrested by the police on charge of raping a 20-year-old girl who was a nursing trainee at his hospital.

Rathika, 26, and Sathi, 35, who abetted Kunhahammed to commit the crime have been remanded in judicial custody.

But Kunhahammed, who complained of chest pain, is a ‘free bird’ at the district hospital here.

Kunhahammed, the rape accused, was first admitted in a special room of the DMO.

The girl, a native of Peravoor, had met Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan a few weeks ago and submitted her complaint.

According to the complaint, Kunhahammed, a rich and influential person and chairman of the hospital, raped her at his office on October 15.

The Chief Minister directed the special branch police to investigate the case since the top officials of the Kanhangad police had good personal connection with the hospital chairman.

The special branch police investigated the case and arrested Kunhahammed on November 16. But he is being treated as a VIP by the police.

Kunhahammed should have been moved to the police cell at the district hospital in Kannur or to the Kozhikode Medical College hospital as he is a rape accused, said the people here.

Since there is no police cell at the district hospital here, Kunhahammed is being treated as an ordinary patient attended by bystanders.

This website’s newspaper contacted DMO Padmanabhan following allegation that Kunhahammed was being protected by a section of doctors, but the DMO failed to give a satisfactory answer whether he was actually suffering from chest pain.
