Culture capital of the state Thalassery and its surrounding areas, which had witnessed seven cold-blooded murders, has lately been experiencing an uneasy calm with the streets getting deserted earlier in the evenings and people not attending programmes and functions.

A city known for its rich tradition is gradually turning into a dull one following political killings.

Political observers are of the opinion that the dominance of the CPI(M) and the killer squads employed by the party are the major reasons for this grave situation.

The shops and other business establishments are functioning normally, however, scepticism among masses exists that all is not well and the perpetrators of violence are somewhere waiting for the next prey.

The CPI(M), which has retained Thalassery Assembly constituency for the past several decades, is considered as the major threat to the democracy and democratic forces in the area.

It is learnt that a sect of leaders from Pinarayi Vijayan to Kodiyeri Balakrishnan were instrumental in the development of such a condition in the area.

An old time communist, Narayanan from the Kodiyeri sect, while speaking to The Pioneer said, “The CPI(M) has reduced itself to a party from mass leanings into a group of goonda elements and the party has lost its human touch. What is the party doing presently other than killing innocent people and building up institutions for people like E.Narayanan to grow? It has lost the mandate of a people’s party. But communism is an ideology which will survive times and will help the world humanity to come out from the miseries”.

He further said, “I am sure that this situation will change in Thalassery and this party will develop from its present situation. I honestly feel that a crop of leaders are the reason for the CPI(M) turning into a party of violence rather than love and compassion”.

The above statement is a clear indicator of how the people of Thalassery and who had communist leanings are thinking at preset on the current situation.
