Two hindu farmers commit suicide

Suicides by farmers, who have fallen in the debt trap, still continued in Kerala and the latest being the alleged suicide by two farmers in the Wayanad district of Kerala today.


These farmers said to have taken the extreme step because of their inability to repay agricultural loans taken by them from various financial institutions. C N Sasi (52) of Meenangadi was found dead at his home due to consumption of poisonous substance, police was quoted as saying. According to a suicide note Sasi had taken the extreme step following his inability to repay the loans taken from the Meenangadi Cooperative Bank and other financial institutions. The other deceased, Puthiyaveetil Sreedharan Nambiar (50) of Anjukunnu Village, was also found dead due to consumption of poison, the police said. As per an FIR filed with the police, the deceased farmer, who had taken loans from various private and public financial firms, failed to repay them following crop failure.


Though the government had announced relief measures for the farmers nothing had reached them so far, farmers group alleged.
