There has been a massive robbery in Nettur Mahadeva Temple, where the prabhamandalam, antique jewellery worth lakhs has been stolen. The Mahadeva Temple at Nettur is one of the divine spots, in the list of 108 Shiva temples.

The robbery was done during the wee morning hours of Thursday, when the temple was broken into. The prabhamandalam, made of brass, weighing over 12 kilos is said to be over 1200 years old. However, attempts to break open the locker where the deity’s jewellery are kept, was futile.

According to reports, the burglars were suspected to be inside the temple even as the person who was entrusted with the task of blowing the morning conch came in for his daily chores. He is said to have footsteps and sounds of running feet as he switched on the light.

“Apart from the robbery of the prabhamandalam, other priceless items were said to be found in a gathered heap. It was left at the very spot, as the temple employees had reached the spot,” say reports.

“An inter-state ring of burglars is suspected to be behind the racket. We have reports pointing towards the same. The police crew from Panangad has begun investigations too. Forensic experts have swung into action. Finger prints have been taken. Foot prints have been noted, and the tools used for breaking open into the temple have also been recovered,” said police.

Devotees have been swarming to the temple in large numbers after hearing the news of temple robbery. According to sources, there are doubts of resurgence in looting temples. Temple robberies are said to be worth crores in international markets.

It must be noted that mega temple robberies at Pazhoor Perum Thrikkovil temple at Piravom, Triprayar SreeRama temple etc still remain unsolved.
