The Panayil Devi temple here has been set ablaze allegedly by Muslim extremists, the latest in a series of attacks numbering around half a dozen on Hindu temples recently.

The extremists were said to have broke open the door of the sanctum sanctorum and got into it and set fire to the clothes of the deity. However, neither was there any damage to the idol nor any theft, temple sources were quoted as saying.

A police team led by Chengannur Dy SP, Mr Gopalakrishna Pillai visited the scene and started investigations. Dog Squad was also summoned from Alapuzha.

In protest against the temple attack the devotees had observed dawn to dusk hartal in the area.
