Kochi: The Talibanic act of palm chopping which shocked the entire state of Kerala has taken a new turn, with the prime accused MK Naser surrendering before police today. Naser, an activist of Jihadi outfit Popular Front had gone into hiding after masterminding the palm chopping of Professor Joseph of Newman College Thodupuzha. A native of Aluva, he surrendered before the NIA court on Friday evening.

Earlier, the NIA had submitted details of phone calls between the others accused in the case and Naser, who had masterminded one of the most heinous crimes, akin to the ones executed in fundamentalist Islamic societies. He is said to have engaged the services of three separate gangs for the purpose, controlling each gang personally via phone. The others accused in the case have been awarded 8 years rigorous imprisonment by the special NIA Court, along with fine.

The incident which took place in July 2010 had the entire state terrorized, when a professor bore the brunt of fundamentalists’ ire, for including a poser in the question paper having the name Mohammed, towards which he bore no intentional malice in mind towards Prophet Mohammed. His palm was chopped off, as he was returning from church.
