Murder of Shaji: Life imprisonment for eight

THALASSERY: Eight CPI (M) activists were sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering an RSS worker V Shaji.

Additional District and Sessions Court (Fast track-3), Thalassery, judge B Ramakanth also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on all the convicts, while the seventh accused M K Surendran was awarded 11 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 35,000.

The judge also ruled that the fine amount of Rs one lakh would be given to the victim’s family.

K V Umesh Babu, C K Asokan, CPI (M) Paduvialyi local secretary, P Pramod, K V Sreedharan, K Rajesh, I Rajeevan, M K Surendran and K Asokhan were the accused.

It was in 2002 that Shaji was hacked to death near his house at Paduvialyi near Thalassery, while he was returning home along with a friend after attending the RSS ‘Sakha’
