T’PURAM: Long spells of preaching against corruption and misuse of power need not necessarily mean that the preacher himself is free of such habits. The latest example is Cooperation Minister G Sudhakaran who has deputed two of his personal staff members for party work.

M Sukumaran Nair, additional private secretary and M B Sasi Thilakan, clerk, in the personal staff of Sudhakaran have been regular absentees in the minister’s office for the last two years. But, there hadn’t been any lapse on their part to draw salary from the exchequer every month.

An inquiry by this website’s newspaper revealed that Sukumaran Nair works as the office secretary of CPM Parliamentary Party assisting its secretay P Jayarajan in administrative affairs and Sasi Thilakan works as the personal assistant of LDF convenor Vaikom Viswan.

As these jobs are out of the purview of the government, it is evident that the two carry out party work by accepting government salary.

When contacted, the office of the Cooperation Minister confirmed that Nair and Thilakan belonged to the staff of the minister. “Sasi works with the LDF convenor and Sukumaran Nair works at the MLA hostel. You can have the contact details of both from AKG Centre,” was the reply received to a query.

While Sasi draws the salary of an LD clerk, Sukumaran Nair is paid on a par with a senior gazetted officer.

Misusing the power for deputing staff members for personal and party work is slowly becoming an accepted practice in the LDF. It may be recalled that this website’s newspaper had reported on May 1 about Health Minister P K Sreemathi appointing her daughter- in-law as additional personal assistant.

Sreemathi first appointed Dhanya M Nair, wife of her son Sudheer Nambiar, as cookcum- clerk and later promoted her to gazetted rank as additional PA.
