Prof Guptan Nair is no more

Eminent Malayalam litterateur, Professor S Guptan Nair, who has contributed immensely to the cultural and literary field for over five decades, died in a hospital here today. He was 87, and is survived by wife, a son and two daughters. He had been sick for the past few weeks and under treatment, family sources said.


Known for his thorough understanding of ancient, classical and modern literature, Nair always wrote in a simple and lucid style even when he dealt with abstruse literary topics. Nair was a recepient of Kendra Sahitya Academy award and Kerala government’s highest literary prize Ezhuthachan Puraskaram. He had also served as president of Kerala Sahitya Academy. 


His widely read works include ‘Isangalkkappuram,’ Kranthadarsikal, Tagore–Kaviyum Manushyanum and Adhunika Sahityam. His recently published memoirs entitled “Mansasmarami” was a widely acclaimed work.
