NDF activist arrested for RSS leader Vinod’s murder

The police on Wednesday took into custody an NDF activist Sadik in connection with the cold-blooded murder of Vinod, RSS Mandal Shareerik Shikshan Pramukh, at Vallikkunnam near Mavelikkara in the district.

The arrested person was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. Police sources said that efforts were on to arrest the remaining culprits in the case. A huge police contingent was deployed in the Vallikunnam area where the situation remained tense.

Vinod was waylaid by a group of NDF goons on Sunday evening when he was returning home after a football match. Local Muslims said Vinod was a social activist loved by all in the neighbourhood including Muslims because of his simple behaviour. He was also close to all the local Muslim groups except the NDF, a closed-door organisation with little local support.

Eyewitness said that after attacking Vinod, the assailants, who were determined to kill him, stopped people from taking the victim to hospital. The RSS leadership accused the police of playing second fiddle to the NDF with the police officers, including Alappuzha District Superintendent E Jayaraj and Mavelikkara DySp Raveendraprasad, acting against the RSS cadre even after the murder. There are apprehensions that State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has given some silent guidelines to the Alappuzha District Police Superintendent for protecting NDF men.

It may be recalled that the Minister had ordered the arrest of a CPI(M) cadre in a case related to the murder of an NDF worker, Faizal in Thalassery, the home constituency of Kodiyeri. Sources in the police told The Pioneer that the arrest was conducted at the instance of the Home Minister.

The role played by DGP Raman Srivastava in cases related to the murders committed by NDF cadre was also being closely watched by intelligence agencies. It is alleged that the top cop has links with a senior leader of the NDF. Three police officers in the rank of IG are under the close watch of intelligence agencies for their alleged relations with the Islamist organisation. There were also allegations that this friendship had resulted in scuttling proper investigations into sensitive cases like Marad riots where eight Hindu fishermen were lynched allegedly with the support of NDF cadre.

NDF is trying to establish itself in the State politics but most of the moderate Muslim organisations like the Indian Union Muslim League and the Kerala Nadvatul Mujahideen are strongly opposing the spread of the fundamentalist ideologies of the NDF.

The NDF is accused of perpetrating several lightning attacks in the State against RSS leaders and workers, including the murder of Kannur district Bauddhik Pramukh T Aswinikumar.
