NSS to launch de-addiction centres

published on May 16, 2013

The Nair Service Society will soon launch its de-addiction centre in Kerala, taking into account the alarmingly growing instances of alcoholism in the state. The proposed centre of NSS will be set up in Kottayam district.

“We had conducted a survey among our members across the state. Around 15,000 persons from 59 Taluk unions took part in the survey, which was completed in four months,” said K R Rajan, head, human resource wing of NSS.

The centre will help in the de-addiction process irrespective of caste, community or religion.

“The survey showed that alcoholism is the main reason for problems in the community, in 29 Taluk unions and in 18 centres, it was the second largest cause,” said Rajan.

“That’s why we decided to start a de-addiction centre. We are already running a number of programmes to check the spread of alcoholism among community members,” he added.
