KOZHIKODE: Congress leader Aryadan Muhammad’s remarks on growing extremism in the state have kicked off a live debate on the issue, evoking sharp reaction from different corners.

Addressing a seminar on October 31, marking the beginning of the campaign against extremism in the district, Aryadan said the IUML is not making sincere efforts to check extremist elements. The campaign will end on January 30.

Aryadan’s reaction came in the wake of the revelations that the suspected Al Badr activist Muhammad Fahad has connections in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.

“The LDF has come to power with the support of the extremist elements. Naturally, they will try to appease these forces. But we need to oppose them. But unfortunately the IUML is not keen in the effort,” Aryadan told this website’s newspaper.

He said the IUML is afraid that it may lose its support base if the party opposes the forces like the NDF.

Aryadan said it is true that there are some disturbing tendencies in the Malappuram district. “But it does not mean that all Muslims are extremists. Such a campaign is dangerous,” he said.

He also blasted the Jama’at-e-Islami for breeding dangerous ideas. “Their concept of ‘Hukumat-e-Ilahi’ which says only an Islamic rule is acceptable is highly objectionable,” he said.

“It is high time that we opposed such divisive tendencies. That is why the Congress took the lead in the campaign,” he said.

It is not the first time that Aryadan is hogging the limelight with his IUML bashing. He had earlier hit headlines with his comments that IUML state president Panakkad Syed Muhammadali Shihab Thangal is not a spiritual leader.

The IUML has not taken Aryadan’s comments kindly. Muslim Youth League general secretary K M Shaji said that Aryadan is playing for the galleries. He said the IUML has taken strong stand against extremists and it does not need a certificate from the Congress leader.

IUML state secretary T A Ahamed Kabir also has reacted sharply to the issue. Kabir said such irresponsible statements need to be discarded with due contempt.

Jama’at-e-Islami district secretariat also condemned Aryadan’s remarks. It is an attempt to appease the Sangh Parivar forces, it said.
