Mumbai underworld links in Kasargod violence?

via Pioneer News Service |Kasargod published on April 20, 2008

The recent violence in Kasargod district, which took four precious lives, had the involvement of certain elements in the Mumbai underworld, highly placed police sources told The Pioneer. Sources also revealed that Mumbai and Kasargod have been sharing a cosy relationship for the past some years and that some political parties in the district are directly and indirectly supporting the new contacts being developed between the Mumbai underworld and the youths of this area.

Police also suspect that a particular organisation, which is giving training to its cadre, have some direct contacts in Mumbai and the police is also probing into this angle.

The State special branch police and the local police are already at loggerheads in the district following the failure of the local police to curb the violence even after the special branch had reported on the possibility of such a violence. The special branch, it is learnt, has already complained to its top officials in Thiruvananthapuram that the local police was not heeding to their report.

A senior officer of the local police in Kasargod told The Pioneer that there was indeed a tip off from the special branch and local police had taken enough precautions but a trivial matter had resulted in the killing of Sandeep which spread out like a major communal violence.

The RSS leadership has already blamed some elements of an Islamic fundamentalist outfit to be behind the murders and inciting violence in the district, which has claimed the life of Suhas, a senior leader of the BMS who was also a leading lawyer in the district.

A senior political leader of the district is said to be having direct contacts with some unsavory elements in the Mumbai underworld and it may be recalled that in the last Assembly elections several buses from Mumbai had reached Kasargod to vote for the Muslim League leader Cherkalam Abdullah.

While the local police does not subscribe to this allegation, a senior officer told The Pioneer on condition of anonymity that there was some planning in the district much earlier to unleash such a violence, inflicting damage to the Hindu community.

Kasargod district has a strong support base to the Hindu organizations and sources in the special branch indicated that a section of a major political party has joined hands with an Islamic outfit with connections to the Mumbai underworld to break the hegemony of the Hindu organisations by creating trouble and violence in the district.

State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has himself admitted that a section was trying to unleash communal violence in the district.

BJP State president PK Krishnadas has also said that there was a planned move in the district to turn it into a communal violence.

Sources informed The Pioneer that the coastal areas of Kasargode district was still engulfed in tension and the presence of a strong contingent of police was the only solace to the local people who did not want to be involved in such issues.
