Pathanamthitta: State convenor of Sabarimala Ayyappa Seva Samajam Kummanam Rajashekharan has called for repealing the directives issued by Transport Commissioner, sabotaging the Safe Zone project meant to ensure safety for Sabarimala bound pilgrims.

The Safe Zone project has been a commendable project initiated by Motor Vehicles Department since the last two years, ensuring that no accidents take place involving the vehicles used by pilgrims. Now, with the Transport Commissioner’s directive issued, seeking to cut short the number of officers and vehicles specified for implementing the project, the required resources for patrolling the vehicles belonging to pilgrims have lessened. In case of an accident, officers do not have vehicles to reach the spot on priority. Out of the many aid posts given in the project, things have been cut short mercilessly, with a single aid post at Elavungal, near Nilakkal. A solid area of support, which was given to pilgrims, now stands annulled,” pointed out Kummanam.

Adding that pilgrims suffered untold woes by being stranded for hours together at the spot, in case of accidents he said, “Doing away of Safe Zone Project is the result of petty squabbles and disputes between Police department and Motor Vehciles department, where pilgrims are being made scapegoats.”
