Pathanamthitta: A bunch of Congress party workers displayed sheer hooliganism during the concluding hours of campaigning, by misusing the statue of the Father of the Nation. The UDF workers are said to have climbed on top of the platform where the statue of Mahatma Gandhi was erected and played drums on the statue’s head, dislodging the spectacles placed on the statue’s eyes. Apart from the derogatory movements, the UDF workers are said to have swung around the statue’s neck and walking stick in dance like movements. The incident took place in Pathanamthitta, in the Central Junction. The display of the tomfoolery was in the presence of senior local leaders of UDF, who allegedly stood muted spectators.

This is not the first instance of effrontery being hurled at the statue of the Father of the Nation. In the culmination of campaigning of the previous Assembly elections, the rear portion of the statue was damaged, due to the combined antics of both LDF and UDF.
