ARANMULA:  In the wake of the Chennai Bench of Green Tribunal of Supreme Court cancelling the environment clearance to the Aranmula airport project, patron of coordination committee against the project Kummanam Rajasekharan has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy

The state government should take up the moral responsibility for its role in supporting the KGS Group-backed project, he told reporters on Wednesday.

Kummanam pointed out that the UDF Government had vested interests in the project by taking up 10 per cent share capital and gave clearances for the project in violation of Land Reforms Act and Paddyfield and Watersheds Protection Act of 2008. Chandy owes an answer to the people of Aranmula and the state for the government’s role in promoting the project, he said.

The Chief Minister failed in tabling the report of an Assembly panel which found the clearance to the airport project in gross violation of the law and was in absence of environment impact study, Kummanam said.

Peelipose Thomas, who also involved in the popular movement, has said the Tribunal verdict was a severe blow to the Central and state governments that  protected the law-breakers involved in the Aranmula project.

He stated that the government should withdraw the declaration on the Aranmula industry zone. The verdict will help bring down the challenges posed by the capitalist forces, he said and added that the government should now immediately withdraw the declaration on industry zone, he said.

The verdict proved that the environmental impact study done by the Enviro Care Company  hired by the KCS Group was fake, he said.

CBI Probe Sought

CPI district secretary P Prasad, one of leaders behind the anti-airport movement, sought a CBI probe in the high-level corruption in the project. The Green Tribunal verdict was a clear mandate to the people’s agitation and against the unholy alliance between the government and the KGS Group, he said.

The verdict is a landmark in the history of the state in the fight for the protection of environment, Prasad said.
