During the previous LDF Government the district had witnessed bloody clashes between the RSS and the CPI-M cadres , several lives were lost and many were maimed for life .The BJP lost two of its young leaders Panniyannor Chandran ,the district secretary of the party and K.T.Jayakrishnan ,the State vice president of the Yuva Morcha. While Chandran was hacked to death in front of his wife. Jayakrishnan was brutally assassinated while he was teaching in a Mokeri east lower primary school. Several students who had witnessed the incident were undergoing psychiatric treatment . The CPI-M leader P.Jayarajan was hacked by a group of men who barged into his house on Tiruvonam day and he was lucky to escape with his life but he has been physically disabled.
The people of the district are worried that violent incidents may recur as Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, considered one of the key leaders of the district, has assumed office as Home Minister .
.A senior leader of the RSS told the Pioneer that “Of course the LDF had done a grave blunder in allocating the sensitive Home portfolio to a person considered one of the main brains behind the violence of Kannur .It may be recalled that he had inflamed violence when he had publicly stated that if needed the CPI-M cadres would resort to manufacturing bombs in police stations”. He adds ” While addressing a student rally he had said that if the police use shock batons against students then the party would retort by using the same against the then Chief Minister”. He hastily added and said “The RSS is not in any way worried about all this, as we as an organization had already resisted the violence of CPI-M, but for the general society his ascendance to this seat would be bad” There are also reports from Kannur that some fundamentalist outfits are planning violence in the district and several social leaders are worried that if the Police is not properly used then there can be major law and order problems which in the long run would take its toll on the efficiency of the minister. A senior leader of the CPI-M told the Pioneer that “The LDF Government would never allow any fundamentalist outfit to rear its head and we will use strong force to crush this menace once and for all. But there are apprehensions within the party as to how Kodiyeri Balakrishnan would manage this ministry and whether he would use force against certain sections which were instrumental for his victory in Thalassery”.
There is a feeling among large sections of society in the district that the CPI-M would concentrate mainly on the improvement of the industrial climate of the district rather than in fermenting any violence .The party knows for certain that if it wants to survive a new industrial culture has to be developed in the district and the party leaders including Pinarayi Vijayan and Kodiyeri Balakrishnan have had several rounds of discussions with the industrial captains of the country for the development of the district. But according to sources several of them had wanted an assurance from these two leaders that they would invest in the district only on the condition that there would not be any violence again.
