Kerala HC appoints special panel for Sabarimala festival

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday appointed a special high power panel for the efficient conduct of the Mandalam-Makara Vilakku pilgrimage festival at the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala starting November 15.

The panel would be headed by Additional Chief Secretary and Special Sabarimala Commissioner K Jayakumar.

The court suggested that its permission should be sought for spending money above Rs 5 lakh and that the Devaswom funds could be used for the conduct of the festival and its preparations.

The High Court appointed the committee considering the recommendations in the report submitted by the Devaswom Ombudsman.

CK Guptan, president of the Travancore Devaswom Board, which administered the major temples including the one in Sabarimala in souther Kerala, and members P Narayanana and P Sumathikkutty Amma would be members of the committee.

The main responsibility of the panel was to issue guidelines for the conduct of the pilgrimage festival, the court said. It would also have the right to engage necessary staff for the works related to the festival.
