Kerala celebrating 144th birth anniversary of Ayyankali

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala today celebrating 144th birth anniversary of Ayyankalli, a great social reformer who vehemently opposed the then prevalent caste discrimination in Kerala society.


 


Ayyankali was born on 14th Chingam, ME 1039 (1863) at Perunkattuvila in Venganoor in Trivandrum District. He has organized dalits and fought against the discriminations. By 1900 dalits got freedom to walk the public roads and later by 1914 dalit children were allowed to participate in the schools.


 


He founded the Sadhujana Paripalana Sangham in 1905. He was also nominated to the Sri Moolam Legislative Assembly of Travancore in 1910.


 


Ayyankalli along with Chattambi swamikal, Sri Narayana Guru, Mannathu Padmanabhan and other leading figures fought many leading battles against caste discrimination and created a sense of unity among Hindus in Kerala. This social renaissance helped to minimize conversion activities in Kerala.
