The saga being that of revival and sustenance of all traditional art forms, here is a group that has paid the most glorious tribute to the traditional folk dance and ritual art of Padayani. Titled ‘Kaaliyattam’ this brilliant piece of ceremonial dance with its native version of facial masks and paintings is a tribute to the Elanthoor Padayani, highlighting the importance of nature conservation.

Directed by Appunni Nair, well known among artists as Sajith, the story, scripting, screen play and editing of this short, brilliant piece of narrative has been done by Sreelal Sivarama Panicker. The short film has a set of mesmerising shots brilliantly captured by Bibin Putheathu.

‘Kaaliyattam’ a skillful presentation of the famed Elanthoor Sreedevi Padayani Sangam conveys a message that feminine form of divinity worshipped by man, is in fact nature. The presentation, which has been filmed also drives home the necessity of how vital conservation of nature is, in the forthcoming years.

“The very basis of a bond between man and the celestial elements is nature. And there can be no more greater an example for this than the internationally acclaimed folk art form of Kerala, Padayani. The art form also stands testimony to a period of time, when nature worship was inextricably blended with the nation’s deeply etched cultural aspect,” said Sreelal, main organizer of the art show.

Padayani, the ceremonial dance, which evolved from central Travancore has its roots to ancient ritualistic dances performed in Bhagavathi temples, honouring Bhadrakali.
