ALUVA: In a breakthrough, the Aluva police nabbed Basheer, 51, of Vazhakulam, one of the three accused in the visa cheating case. Basheer and the other gang members cheated more than 39 job-seekers and swindling about Rs 26 lakh by promising visas for job aspirants from various parts of the state.

Acting on a tip-off, the police led by CI K.G.Babukumar and SI S.Jayakrishnan nabbed Basheer from Vazhakulam Junction, near here, on Friday.

According to the police, the accused had collected Rs 65,000 from each job-seeker. Basheer allegedly told the police that the amount was handed over to one Babu of Kannur, a leader in the visa racket operating from Mumbai. Another accused, Ali of Ponjassery, allegedly introduced Babu to Basheer.

However, the police have registered a case against Basheer, Babu and Ali under IPC 420 and 34 for cheating. Basheer, who was produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate here, was remanded in Judicial custody on Friday.

The police have launched an intensive search for the other accused
