KOCHI: The Kerala High Court today stays Raja Ravi Varma Puraskaram to ‘artist’ M F Hussain. The court order comes after private interest litigation was filed by the royal family members.

The petitioner argued Hussain had abused the freedom of expression by depicting Hindu gods and goddess in a vulgar manner, disregarding religious sentiments and feelings. Hence there are no guidelines for selection of the award. Despite several protests, the Government has not withdrawn the award, he stated

It was earlier decided to present the award to Hussain on September 17.
