KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed the Ernakulam Range Inspector General to conduct an inquiry into the allegations raised against Kochi Special Branch Assistant Commissioner Shamsu Illikkal.

The inquiry will probe the allegation that the official threatened a person who had lodged a complaint against Justice For Madhani Forum.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice J Chelameswar and Justice Antony Dominic further directed the police to look into the alleged fund collection by Justice for Madhani Forum.

The court has asked the IG to submit a report within three weeks.

The court passed the order on a petition filed by T G Mohandas seeking a directive to the CBI to take over the inquiry into the complaint which he had lodged with the City Police Commissioner.

In his complaint, the petitioner alleged that the Forum was collecting funds from Masjids and it was in violation of the provisions under the Religious Institution (Prevention of Misuse) Act 1988.

He further alleged that Assistant Commissioner Shamsu Illikkal, who was assigned by the Commissioner to look into his complaint, threatened him.

The City Police Commissioner had submitted a report before the High Court stating that the allegations raised by the complainant against Assistant Commissioner were baseless.

However, the court observed that the report by the commissioner of police was not fair.
