Guruvayur Temple in the Vice Grip of ‘Darshanam’ Lobby?

There recent allegations of a ‘Darshanam Lobby’ operating in Sreekrisha Temple, Guruvayur. It is being alleged that devotees who arrive at Sreekrishna Temple Guruvayur are being subject to humiliating taunts from Devaswom Board office bearers, in spite of having waited in the queue for long hours. It is said that officers are resorting to acceptance of bribe, there by facilitating easy, tireless and quick Darshan of the Lord. It is said that the wealth being amassed thus is such that would put mafias to shame.

The temple swells up with devotees during the Mandala season, with pilgrims lining up in queue at 9.00 pm the previous night for the famed Vagacharthu which commences at 3.00 am every day. However, according to sources, the lobby which now manipulates darshanam topples the efforts of all who stand patiently in queue.

In Guruvayur temple, VVIPs are granted special provision for Darshanam.

It is alleged that the same is now being misused by a couple of officials of the Devaswom Board, a handful of police men and a few lodge owners, who take money and make necessary provisions. People, who are given special provision thus, are made to enter via the Northern gateway. Sources state that a person as to pay a minimum amount of Rs 500, in case she or he wants Darshanam without standing in the queue. It is said that offerings and facilities for Pooja are granted if the amount is hiked. A portion of the amount is allegedly given to those handling Prasadam counter. Many lodges and agents are said to be working in league with the process. Former employees of the Devaswom Board and even a handful of police officials are said to be involved in the same. Specially selected persons entrusted with the job can even be found in bus stands and railway stations.

Devotees are known to hand over receipts of payasam and other offerings to beggars who are seen near the temple. A special team is said to be entrusted with the task of collecting these receipts from the beggars. Prasadam, which is bought this way, is re-sold in other ways. Family members of Devaswom Board employees are granted VVIP status. Reports also state that Devaswom Board guest house is used and misused by them.
