TRIPUNITHURA: The gold-plated golaka of Kandankavu Bhagavathy temple was stolen on Wednesday night. The golaka worth around Rs 1.5 lakh was recently installed at the temple.

The Kandankavu Bhagavathy temple, which belongs to the Cochin Devaswom Board under Thiruvankulam group, had been in a pathetic condition till a year back. With the support of the devotees, renovation process started nearly a year ago.

“We have completed the renovation work, including the construction of the nalambalam, cleaning of the temple pond and the temple compound,” said Raj Menon, an active member of the renovation committee. The chief priest of the temple, after the routine rituals on Wednesday night, locked the sanctum sanctorum and left the temple as usual.

When he returned on Thursday morning, he found the lock of the main door of the sanctum sanctorum broken. He informed the locals and the devotees. Though the gold-plated golaka was stolen, the old silver golaka was found near the sanctum sanctorum.

Udayamperoor Sub-Inspector Y.Nizamuddin visited the temple and has started investigation into the golaka theft. Thiruvankulam group Devaswom Officer Muralidhara Warrier too visited the temple.
