Rs 22 lakh seized; two youths held

KASARGOD: The Bekal police seized Rs 22 lakh from two youths travelling on a bike on Friday. The cash is suspected to be hawala money, the police said.

A police party led by Bekal sub-inspector T K Rathnakumar intercepted the bike at 7.30 am.

The police took the youths Siddique, 20, of Mavinakkatta near Kumbla and Iqbal, 30, of Melparamba in to custody.

When the bike was intercepted the youths told police that the bundle with Iqbal contained notebooks. But on inspection the police found Rs 6 lakh.

When the police frisked Siddique, Rs 16 lakh was found kept in socks and tied around chest and knee.

Police said the youths had confessed that they were carrying the money to some persons in Kanhangad.

The youths were later handed over to the assistant director of Enforcement in Kozhikode.
