TRIPUNITHURA: One person was injured in an explosion that took place on the premises of a tea shop, near Puthiyakavu Bhagavati temple, on Thursday. The explosion took place around 7.30 am. “I saw a plastic carry-bag inside which was a paper ball. I asked Karthik, a worker at the tea stall, to check the paper ball,” said Shukkoor, another worker at Hotel Vaishakh at Puthiyakavu Junction.

Karthik, hailing from Tamil Nadu, kicked the plastic carry-bag and suddenly the paper ball exploded. Karthik sustained minor injuries, Shukkoor said. A windowpane of the tea stall also broke in the explosion.

The police team headed by Tripunithura Circle Inspector Bijo Alexander immediately reached the spot. But the bomb squad and dog squad could not find any explosive materials there.

Thrikkakkara Assistant Commissioner Sethuraman also reached the spot. “From the description given by Karthik, the paper ball must have been a country-made cracker,” said Tripunithura Circle Inspector Bijo Alexander.

However, the police have started an investigation.
