MATTANNUR: Kannur district was rocked by yet another murder late on Sunday night. The victim this time was a BJP worker, A V Sajith, a private bus driver. P V Biju, another BJP worker and cleaner of the bus sustained serious injuries.

Sajith, 26, was returning home along with Biju after attending a marriage reception when they were attacked by a 12-member gang near Naduvanad around 1.30 a.m. on Monday.

Sajith, who suffered serious stab injuries on both legs, bled to death on the spot while Biju has been admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, where he was yet to be declared out of danger. Sajith had quit the CPM and joined the BJP two years ago. He is survived by father Kunhiraman Nambiar, mother Leela, siblings Sajesh and Sanila.

A hartal to protest against the killing, observed in the Mattanur municipality and Thillankery and Kizhur-Chavassery panchayats, on Monday was total. ] Senior police officials led by IG V Santaharam are camping in the area.

The body of Sajith was cremated here after postmortem at the Thalassery General Hospital on Monday afternoon.

BJP-RSS leaders Valsan Thillankerry, P K Velayudhan, K Renjith and P P Suresh Babu attended the cremation.

The police have filed cases against 12 CPM workers in connection with the murder on the basis of a statement made by Biju.

Tension as cops cane BJP men

Tension prevailed in the Mattannur- Iritty region here following the murder of BJP worker Sajith at Naduvanad. The police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse a violent group of BJP men protesting against the murder.

A group of BMS workers tried to block the KSRTC bus operating between Iritty and Mananthavady at the Iritty bus stand. The police reached the spot and dispersed the BMS workers.

The police used lathis to scare away gatherings of protesting groups of BJP men at Punnad and Kakkayangad.
