Eight persons injured in clash at church

Thrissur, Monday, August 22, 2011: Eight persons were injured after a clash broke out between two groups of faithful at a church near on Sunday over a dispute on management of its daily affairs, police said.

The clash occurred at the St Mary’s Assumption Church in Kottekad under Thrissur Catholic Arch Diocese following a dispute between the authorities and the faithful over the management of the daily affairs of the church, they said.

For some months, parishers of the church were at loggerheads with vicar Francis Muttath alleging that he was functioning undemocratically, Thomas Emmatty, convenor of Kottekad Parish Protection Committee, said.

The injured, four each from both groups, had been admitted to nearby hospitals, police said.
