Malappuram: Dr Ummer Farooque, District Medical Officer of Malappuram has been accused of indulging in private medical practice, violating all existing laws. Sources have revealed that the practice is being rendered in Kottackal bus stand, in a building adjacent to a private medical shop.Dr Ummer, who has faced several other allegations in the past is said to be a favourite of the ruling Muslim League. Members of doctors’ association have accused Dr Ummer of furthering many of the hidden agendas of those in ruling class.

The DMO is said to be attending patients on Saturdays, Sundays and other red letter days. Booking is done via the adjacent medical shop and prior appointment is required for availing the DMO’s services. The entire fiasco is carefully executed, concealing the medical practitioner’s identity in all possible ways, including prescription letters.

Even though doctors in government services are allowed to avail private practice, senior medical officers like DMO are not allowed to do the same. Conforming to these rules, DMOs are given an extra amount in top of salary.
