CPM tries to woo Madani once again

via Pioneer News Service | Kochi published on September 11, 2007

While Pinarayi reached up to Madani’s room and went back without meeting him owing to the presence of a heavy contingent of mediapersons, Achuthanandan met him early in the morning.

These meetings with Madani were not accidental or just for the sake of the meeting even though all the leaders are coming out with the theory that these were just courtesy calls. Observers are of the opinion that there is more than what is meeting the eyes in these meetings and just like Union Defence Minister AK Antony has sounded the Congressmen to be prepared for an impending mid-term election, it seems that the CPI(M) leaders also have got the message clear from the national leadership on the possibility of a general election.

The CPI(M) leadership had recently shied away from Madani and the party had decided to have an arm’s length distance from the rabble-rousing Islamist leader who is desperately trying for an image makeover. The CPI(M) leaders who were eager to court Madani had after second thoughts carefully moved away from him and this was witnessed in Kozhikode when no CPI(M) leader worth his salt was present in the public reception accorded to the Madani. The questions is: Why then the sudden love for Madani?

As CPI(M) has some sharp political brains who think ahead of the times, the party leadership feels that there is nothing wrong in maintaining a relationship with Madani.

According to sources in the State Intelligence wing, the CPI(M) leaders have got a feeling of Madani’s potential and his reported statement of a possible adjustment with Islamist resistance organisation, NDF. The party knows that Madani’s party, combined with the NDF, would be a formidable alliance, and the party wants to make it sure that at least he is not forging any political alliance with the Congress or and the Opposition UDF.

A senior CPI(M) leader of from Kannur told The Pioneer, “Politics is the art of the possible and there is nothing wrong for the party leaders to have a meeting with Madani. At least, we should make sure that he remains a silent partner of us. It should be remembered that it was the CPI(M) and the LDF Government which had taken all the pains and put all the pressures to give Madani a proper treatment in the Coimbatore jail.”

The party leadership after a self-assessment has the feeling that except for Malabar area, the party and the Left Front are not doing good and that Madani and his PDP have a sizeable support in the southern belt. According to sources, the CPI(M) has already promised all help for the consolidation of Madani politics in north Kerala for the support rendered by him in the Muslim pockets of south Kerala.

The CPI(M) leaders asses that the presence of Madani and his party is heartening to the Left Front to counter the Muslim League which as a political party still has a strong base among the Muslims of the State.
