CPM planning violence in Kannur: BJP

via Pioneer News Service | Kochi published on March 1, 2008

State BJP president PK Krishnadas has said that the CPI(M) is planning for major political violence in Kannur district. The Marxist party had transferred the zonal Inspector General of Police as a prelude to this move, he alleged.

Addressing mediapersons here on Saturday, the Krishnadas said that the party had got reports from the party workers that the CPI(M) was planning for a major showdown and this was according to the strategy chalked out during the State conference of the CPI(M) in Kottayam last month.

He said that the CPI(M) was also spreading violence to other parts of the State. The State police was providing support to the CPI(M) gameplan, he said. The BJP leader charged the police department with total servitude to the present rulers, adding that police were mainly responsible for all the CPI(M)’s atrocities as the department was not charging cases even against the CPI(M) cadre.

The State BJP president also came out heavily on the Union Budget saying that it was election-oriented, without showing any direction. He said that Finance Minister P Chidambaram had not shown any consideration for the Indian economy, which was on the verge of collapse.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) workers attacked a BJP activists and a Congress worker in Kodiyeri, the hometown of State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. It may be noted that a CPI(M) worker KP Jijesh was assassinated here a month ago. The CPI(M) workers had gone on rampage after the killing, destroying the BJP and RSS offices in several parts of Thalassery. Tagore Vidyaniketan, a school run by RSS, was completely destroyed by the CPI(M) workers.

The police had not been able to arrest the culprits in the case and District Superintendent of Police, Kannur, Manoj Abraham was almost on the verge of cracking the case when he was transferred back to Kochi as City Police Commissioner. The police and the local residents have already ruled out the possibilities of involvement of the RSS in the murder.

Some NDF activists were under suspicion but unconfirmed reports suggested that a group war that has come up in the CPI(M) could be the reason behind Jijesh’s murder. It may be recalled that the killed worker Jijesh was a vociferous critic of several top leaders of the CPI(M) including Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.
