ALAPPUZHA: The Harippad police on Thursday registered cases against 15 CPM workers, including Haripad grama panchayat president and his son, for allegedly pouring urine on two women Congress workers and assaulting them during the Assembly polls.

The incident occurred at Mannarasala UP School on Wednesday evening following a tiff between the Congress and CPM workers.

According to the complaint lodged with the Harippad police by Mahila Congress workers Sethulekshmi and Sreedevi, the CPM workers, led by panchayat president Chandran and his son Binu, assaulted them and poured urine on them. Two Congress men were also injured during the melee. Sethulekshmi is the UDF’s booth agent. Sreedevi, her husband Omanakuttan and another Congress worker Gopinathan Nair were hurt and have been admitted to the Harippad Taluk Hospital.

The CPM workers also allegedly attacked the house of Sujatha, a Mahila Congress worker.

Meanwhile, the UDF workers, led by KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala, staged a dharna at Kacheripadi Junction at Harippad demanding the speedy arrest of the accused. The LDF workers also staged a dharna alleging that the complaint by the Congress workers was a fabricated one. Though both the LDF and the UDF leaders sought sanction for using mike, Alappuzha SP Ashok Kumar denied it. Kayamkulam DySP D Suneesh Kumar said the clothes worn by Sethulekshmi and Sreedevi at the time of the incident have been sent to Chemical Examiner’s Laboratory at Thiruvananthapuram.

Ernakulam range IG R Sreelekha has collected the statement of Sethulekshmi.
