CPM dumps Karunakaran & family

via HK Correspondent published on February 18, 2006

THIRUVANAMTHAPURAM: The CPM on Friday made it clear that the Democratic Indira Congress Karunakaran (DICK) will not be admitted to the LDF at any cost. Prakash Karat, the CPM  secretary told media persons here that his party will not have any kind of alliance with the faction led by K Karunakaran.  There were reports in the media that Karunalaran and his acolytes will be admitted to the LDF. With the CPM dumping him, it is almost curtain down for Karunakaran and his son.

But efforts are on to bring the Karunakaran faction into the UDF as one of its constituents. The CPM decision is a follow up to the view expressed by Congress President Sonia Gandhi to Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechuri that the Grand Old Man of Indian Politics should be given a humiliating send off from the political arena of the state. The Pioneer, a leading daily, has reported the other day that Karunakaran’s fate has been sealed by the Congress President who expressed her displeasure to the CPM leaders about the ongoing seat finalization talks between them and Karunakaran. “The present  UPA regime has an outside support of the CPM. But the personal equations Sonia Gandhi has with both Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechuri, who are the movers of the CPM, is excellent and they would not do any damage to Sonia Gandhi,” said  a senior KPCC leader to the Pioneer. The leader, considered close to 10, Janpath, also told the daily that Sonia Gandhi can call more shots in the CPM than many of the senior comrades in Kerala.

Over the years, the CPM has become some kind of B team of the Congress. With Sitaram Yechury and Karat stooping to the levels of servile of the Nehru- Gandhi clan, it is time for Karunakaran and his cohorts to find out some other alternatives.
