CPM, CPI clashes lead to tension in Kasargod

via Daily Pioneer published on August 30, 2007

Kannur : Seven CPI activists were injured in clashes between the CPI(M) and the CPI activists in the district on Wednesday. Even close relatives of the senior CPI leaders are not spared. This includes mother of CPI Kasargod district assistant secretary Rajan.

Generally, after the CPI(M) comes to power in the State, its political rivals especially RSS in Kannur and CPI in Kasargod are at the receiving end of the violence unleashed by the Marxists. There were instances of the CPI leaders and local activists getting killed in Marxist attacks.

According to political observers, whenever Kodiyeri Balakrishnan becomes State Home Minister, ‘goonda’ elements in the party are let loose.

It is said that the CPI(M) always keep the Home portfolio with itself. With police on their side, the Marxists find it easy to target the rivals as there is no fear of police action on the cadre.

The CPI district leaders while speaking to The Pioneer said, “There are violent and unilateral clashes carried out by the CPI(M) goons who are not reined in by the party leadership. They think that with the Home portfolio with them they can arm twist us and they have indeed been attacking us for the past several years and we are bearing this for the larger interests of Left unity.”.

The CPI(M) cadres had in fact killed a former AISF district leader some years ago and all these violent one-sided attacks of the CPI-M takes place whenever the Left Government is in saddle and the party is commanding the home portfolio.

The CPI(M) which has always tried to cover up its own group activities by unleashing terror on the rival political parties had started the same in Thalassery area with the lynching of a BJP worker in Kuthuparamaba the constituency of the party legislative party leader P Jayarajan, who is fast rising in the party hierarchy as a pet nominee of Pinarayi Vijayan.

In another attack at Thalassery the CPI(M) workers ransacked an RSS shakha where the Rakshabandan celebrations were taking place. In the RSS workers’ retaliation a CPI(M) worker was severely injured.

According to sources in the State police, there is serious planning which is taking place behind the scenes and the RSS leadership is waiting for the Sreekrishna Jayanthi celebrations to be over.

The RSS leadership opined that State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan is taking the law into his own hands thus creating unnecessary scenes in the area and according to sources in the organisation it will not lie low facing the attacks from the CPI(M) workers.

This according to interpretation means there could be more things in store in the days to come and if clashes erupt then it would be a going back to the bloody days of 1999 when there were several killings in Panur and Thalassery area following violent political clashes between the CPI(M) and the RSS workers.
