Counterfeit currency rackets on the rise in State

The Department of Revenue Intelligence has pointed a finger on certain terror groups across the border and their associates in the middle eastern countries and support base in the State as the major reason for the increase in supply of counterfeit currency in the State.

A senior DRI official in Chennai while speaking to The Pioneer over telephone confirmed that the State was on a high alert following the presence of well organised rackets who were into the supply and distribution of counterfeit currencies across the State. The DRI sleuth also said that these notes were mostly printed in a foreign country and aided and abetted by that country’s intelligence set up.

The DRI officials warned the State Government that the quality of the notes were very high and in certain cases top officials from the Reserve Bank would only be able to identify these currencies. The DRI was also watching into the antecedents of certain professionals who were earlier holding positions in financial and banking sectors to be the master brains behind these counterfeit currency racket.

According to a top source in the State Home Department, there were certain top ranking police officers who were attached to some people associated with this racket. While those attached were holding high positions in the society, the DRI sleuths have no option but to go ahead with their duty as the scene was changing from bad to worse.

The DRI and the Intelligence Bureau were tracing the presence of these counterfeit currencies and the persons who were behind this well organised rackets. Sources in the policing agencies told The Pioneer that these rackets have their headquarters in certain well organised fundamentalist outfits who have their links in the State. An Islamic organisation with firebrand ideologies is been traced by the intelligence agencies for harbouring certain persons who were behind this racket. The intelligence agencies were finding it difficult to crack the case as the culprits were using all the high end communications to get away from being traced.

However sources in the State police told The Pioneer that the agencies have got clear evidences of the operatives and those who were behind this racket. The Intelligence agencies were taking their time to nail the culprits and officials were tight lipped on the interrogation details.

The intelligence agencies have already linked some hawala rackets with the counterfeit currency rackets and sources revealed that this hawala racket had pumped in huge sums of money in the Marad killings. The police had even come across a top hawala operative in Thrissur who was reportedly having links with the culprits in the Marad case.

Sources in the State Home Ministry told The Pioneer that there were evidences of the involvement of some organisations active in the State with the hawala racket.

The sources also said that some people in Kochi and Kozhikode who were active in an organisation had links with those involved in the racket which was trying to destabilise the Indian economy.
